Lobos For The Cause

On Oct. 29th, the La Joya Journalism team hosted LJ’s very first cancer walk. At first, participants were meant to walk on the track, but the weather decided to rain on the parade. So the La Joya Journalism staff ended up changing locations and hosted the walk in the gym.

“It went really good, even though it rained and we didn’t go outside and we couldn’t have Kona Ice. They still tried their best to have the music and to make it fun for everyone, and to dance while they were walking,” said Aiten Elgamal.

Before participants began walking, FBLA wanted to form a human ribbon for Yearbook to take a photo. It was a bit of a struggle figuring out a way to take the photo now that it was being taken in the gym and not on the actual football field. After a while, the Journalism Staff found a solution and just had everyone sit down for the photo instead of standing.

After the photos were taken, the walk began. While the participants walked, the Journalism team played music and began to encourage people to dance while they walked. After a while of walking a few of the participants started having a dance off with Mr. West.

Towards the end of the walk the Journalism team chose a winner for the best pink costume. It was down to three contestants, but in the end the winner was Aiten Elgamal. She was in pink from head to toe! Props to her for going all out and winning the free yearbook. The second and third place winners ended up getting an exclusive discount on their yearbooks.

Overall, the Cancer Walk was successful. Participants had fun although Kona Ice had to leave due to lighting. Participants still looked like they enjoyed walking for the cause, and in the end those who showed up didn’t show up for Kona Ice, they showed up because they cared and wanted to help save lives.
