Photo Opp or Photo Flop?

Photo+Opp+or+Photo+Flop%3F

Last week a group of girls were photographed with letters on the front of their shirts that so happened to spell out the “N” word for everyone to see. The picture was taken on senior picture day which included 3,100 students, and these girls were only a small portion of the student body. The letters were intended to spell out  “BEST*YOU’VE*EVER*SEEN*CLASS*OF*2016”.

The picture that has been floating around should not be overlooked and put off to the side. The six girls were old enough to know what they were doing and the profanity they were using.

From this one picture many individuals were outraged with anger, confusion and disappointment. This one photo has been reposted many times on many platforms of social media which has caught attention from people nationally. Regardless of it being from a televised news report or articles online.

Out of these six girls only one has come forward with a public apology for her actions of spelling out the racial slur. Rachel Steigerwald stated, ” I have come here to say that I know people have been offended from what I did, and I’ve come here to say I am incredibly, incredibly sorry,”.

From all of this media attention and chaos there was one lady who was overjoyed from all on this. Cicely Cobb, a former teacher at Desert Vista High School, expressed how she was ecstatic about all the media attention towards the high school itself. She stated, ” There’s been a racial issue with Desert Vista High School since the school opened ” and now she’s overjoyed that the school is getting the attention and confronting the issue.

Cicely Cobb said it nicely herself, if the school had been known for racial issues before than this couldn’t have been a coincidence. In my part, I believe the 6 girls had planned this “innocent” group picture together and they knew exactly what they were doing.

These girls knew exactly what the shirts were going to spell as a whole, but these girls had gone off by themselves and decided to spell what they did.
