Sunday February 28th was the day that the 88th annual Oscars were aired. The night was full of excitement and surprises.

Once again, Leonardo DiCaprio was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role and this time, he ACTUALLY won. He finally has an Oscar, ladies and gents.

Although DiCaprio winning an Oscar was a huge deal, there was a moment during the academy awards that had the crowd and audience at home in tears and silence.

Lady Gaga performed her very sentimental song, “Til It Happens To You”.

The song includes strong lyrics like “Cause when you fall you gotta get up, you gotta get up and move on” which caused an emotional wave in the media.

With recent news around the media about the situation going on with well-known singer Ke$ha, the topic hit close to home and Lady Gaga made it her goal to bring awareness. Her heart-wrenching performance included people from the college sexual assault film “The Hunting Ground” and other rape survivors.

Lady Gaga then confirmed that she is a survivor herself, which she did not specify on, and her assault impacted her life on the long run. She raised awareness for the people that might be going through the situation that she was put through.

What made her performance more powerful and emotional was the fact that some of her family members did not know that she was a survivor.

I never told them I was a survivor. I was too ashamed. Too afraid. And it took me a long time to even admit it to myself because I’m Catholic and I knew it was evil but I thought it was my fault. I thought it was my fault for ten years.”

Strong, empowering, moving are just a few words to describe what Lady Gaga did at the Oscars.

It takes a lot of courage to talk about struggles as severe as rape and sexual assault. Gaga proved that anybody can be strong enough to one day talk about their own stories.

Lady Gaga’s performance shows that even celebrities can be victims of any sort of abuse and can be a beacon of hope for other survivors.
