La Joya Community High School has many clubs, sports teams, and extracurricular activities that keeps students involved. Almost every teacher on our campus has a club of their own interest.
Ms. Gorgan, a sophomore English teacher has her own feminism club and when asked what kind of opportunity it offers said, “I think feminism gives everyone, boy or girl, the opportunity to share their experience with sexism. Gender bias is still an issue and this club is an outlet but also a group of students dedicated to making a change.”
Clubs are extremely diverse, from feminism, creative writing, chess, and even a video game club. Clubs are a great opportunity to meet students who hold the same interest, or partake in the same activities.
Speaking on activities, there are a lot of opportunities for athletes. A football team, basketball, cross country, golf, wrestling, and more! Sports give students a chance to showcase their talents, get help from coaches and/or teammates, and meet people that can help them through their high school career and even after high school.
LJCHS has over 2,300 students and there is something here for everyone. A student who has been here since her freshman year, now senior, Tamryn Babers said “I think we have opportunities to get involved and enjoy our time here at school.”
La Joya continues to expand offerings for electives and core areas to meet the needs of the growing student body. Varied programs are offered including things such as theater, band, art, dance, French, student leadership, photography, sports medicine, and more. Another student, Jordan Parker said that here at LJCHS students can, “Be themselves and be original.”
