As President Donald Trump and his representatives continue with their “Immigration Ban,” many people are taking it into their own hands to show how America would be without Immigrants for a day on February 16th.
Immigrants across the whole United States are going for “Day without Immigrants” to demonstrate how America would look like if there happened to be no Immigrants around. Business owners that happen to be Immigrants closed their doors for the day, they were also told to help the protest by not purchasing anything in stores, and students that happened to be Immigrants should not go to school. Many people did not agree with the “Day without Immigrants” Protest, but many others did and they took it to the streets to prove their point of how many of them there is here in the United States.
Arizona is known to be one of the states in America that has one of the biggest ratios of immigrants. There happens to be more than 105,000 small businesses owned by undocumented American citizens, which means that at least more than half were closed to help the protest. Not only did business’s shut down for the day, but Students of The Valley of the Sun followed the protest by making absences. Many school’s saw a dramatic amount of absences with a high of 600 students absent. Many students at La Joya Community High School were absent due to the “Day Without Immigrants”.
“A day without Immigrants is to show how impactful the immigrants are here to Arizona, and I as a student to of La Joya, decided to part take in this movement to show the school and others that immigrants do make America great and do impact the population of the United States,” stated Carlos Pacheco, Junior at La Joya Community High School.
Austin Bastin, also a Junior at La Joya part took in the protest to help, “I am not an immigrant but most of my friends and their families are, So I partook in this protest to show that the removal of immigrants wouldn’t just affect the population, but it would also affect a lot of people that are close to them”.
