Texting and Driving

Produced by Jazmine Page, Mimi Jubran, Megan Wedgeworth

Do you ever hear on the news about an accident caused by texting and driving?

Well, each year, about 1,300,000 people are killed in road accidents. Over 3,000 people die every day due to collisions on the road; out of the 3,000, 11 teens die every day because of texting and driving. Accidents can happen anywhere in the world, and at any time.

From texting, to calling, to using navigation systems, people are finding more and more ways to use their mobile phones. In the matter of taking your mind off the road, just to check your phone, to open a text, and responding; in average, it takes 3 seconds for an accident to happen. 1 out of 4 car accidents happen because of texting and driving.

Statistics show that texting and driving is 6 times more likely to get you in an accident than drunk driving. Yes, it is safer to get behind a wheel while drunk than it is to text while driving (Not encouraging students/adults to drink and drive). The chances of a crash are increased by 23 times while texting, even if the crash is the other drivers fault.

If you or someone you know texts while driving, it is best to avoid the text until you reach your destination. Another option is pulling off to the side of the road to respond, if it that important. You can help prevent texting and driving, while also preventing and lowering the rates of car accidents in the U.S.
