Colorado Springs Into Action

Planned Parenthood Shooting
CNN
Witnesses heard over 10 gunshots being fired.

On Friday, Nov. 27th around 11:30 am, the Colorado Springs Police Department received a phone call reporting a shooter inside of the Planned Parenthood building, located near numerous offices and shopping centers.

Once dispatchers received the call they sent out a warning telling people to stay inside nearby businesses and to shelter themselves, putting Colorado Springs busy life into a standstill while the police closed down roads, and put people into a lockdown.

“It was shocking to watch SWAT teams while holed up inside a nail salon,” witness Jill Lavelle said.

The altercation lasted nearly six hours before the gunman, Robert Lewis Dear, age 59, was arrested. Killing three people during his open fire, two civilians, and one police officer.

As the gunman was taken into custody, remaining officers looked around making sure the suspect didn’t leave any explosives inside or outside of the building. Bomb technicians investigated the gunman’s car, which was left in the parking lot.

It still isn’t clear as to why the suspect chose the Planned Parenthood building but that isn’t stopping officers from figuring out his motive.

“We don’t yet know the full circumstances and motives behind this criminal action, and we don’t yet know if Planned Parenthood was in fact the target of this attack,” said Vicki Cowart, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains in a written statement.

Once the news about the shooting and the capture was put out on social media, people took notice. This caused #ColoradoSpringsShooting to trend worldwide and captured celebrities, governors, and the president’s attention, who sent out their condolences to those who were affected by the shooting.
