The La Joya Community High School volleyball team has had a hard season this year as their home gymnasium was under repair for the first 10 weeks of their 12-week season. Regardless, the volleyball team has bonded close together this season. Miley Zambrano on the Junior Varsity team admires the bond the team has with each other.
“It’s a whole big family.”
Liz Idowu on the Varsity team has also had a good experience with the team this year.
“My experience is, it’s really good. Everyone is so nice and everyone’s funny. So yeah, I like it.”
Kaira Viray on the Varsity team explains why she continues playing with LJCHS volleyball program each year.
“I just like the community that we have going on over here.”
In addition to joining a caring community, joining a volleyball team can lead to positive mental health benefits.
“Your involvement in volleyball can improve your mood, reduce stress, and encourage pride in your accomplishments as a team member.” stated Health Fitness Revolution.
New Port Academy observed “Another study, published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, found that students who play team sports in grades 8 through 12 have less stress and better mental health as young adults.”
“With so much of sport being mental, volleyball athletes can build their mental fortitude, which will provide benefits in sport and other aspects of life.” noted USA Volleyball.
Playing volleyball can also impact your physical health in a variety of ways.
“In volleyball, your upper body is strengthened as well as your arms, shoulders, thigh and lower leg muscles. It can also tone and strengthen the cardiovascular and respiratory system.” writes Center for Professional Recovery.
Sport Fitness Advisor explains “The need for energy in the muscles while on a volleyball game, increases the body’s metabolism rates to cover the energy requirements.”
“According to Well Source’s Aerobic Mile Chart, you expend the same amount of energy playing an easy, slow-paced game of volleyball for 20 minutes as you would jogging one mile.” stated RRC Polytech.
Joining the LJCHS volleyball team will improve your mental and physical health. You will also be joining a big, caring family.
