For the longest time, many rock, metal, and pop bands have used six stringed guitars. Many variants were used with different tunings but all around it was always the same number of strings. Then the Nu Metal band ‘Korn’ shot the seven-string guitar into mainstream popularity. With the use of the seven-string guitar being a key component of their sound. After this use many metal bands that are heavier sound have used seven-string guitars, some using eight. One of the most legendary and famous bands to rock the eight-string guitar is American deathcore band Suicide Silence (shortened to S.S) Some famous bands that use seven-string guitars include Nile, Suicide Silence, Deftones, and Nevermore.

Outside of the Seven-String world, many deathcore bands use EIGHT string guitars. The eight-string guitar allows bass tunings on the guitar to give it a higher punch and make you want to slightly headbang when turned up loudly. Other famous bands that use eight string guitars include Deftones (again), , Meshugga, and Godflesh
