3 A Day food panty is a nonprofit organization started by Ms. Kuehn, a marketing teacher on campus, and Ms. Romo, a social worker at the school, were devoted in the spring of 2017 to assure that food can be provided for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
Students are welcomed to drop off non-perishable foods to help feed their peers. The food pantry helps struggling students and families put food on their table anonymously, they’re given food on Friday’s in order to eat over the weekend.
“I can definitely say it’s changed peoples lives, it was started because second semester I came back from the holidays all concerned about students not having food for two weeks. It was on my mind a lot,” said Deborah Kuehn, teacher at La Joya.
The organization is ran by Ms. Kuehn’s classes and FBLA to make sure the food is packaged and delivered to the students in need. During the holidays is the most important time for students to receive food due to the lack of school during November and December.
“It feels good to know I’m helping one of my peers,” Aerick James, Senior at La Joya Community High School said, “Sometimes you forget that there’s students struggling with something so important”.
The most common items donated to the pantry are: beans, rice, cupped noodles, pasta, and pasta sauce. Stop by Ms. Kuehn’s room (819) or Ms. Romo’s office in the front today. You never know who you’re helping put a meal on the table.
