Black Swan is a 2010 American psychological horror thriller film directed by Darren Aronofsky from a screenplay by Mark Heyman, John McLaughlin, and Andres Heinz, based on a story by Heinz. The narrative follows Nina Sawyers, played by Natalie Portman, as she grapples with the ambition and determination of becoming a prima ballerina. Nina’s innocent nature is a stark contrast with the darker demands that her world makes and so to ensure her survival, she adapts starts to contort not just her values but her perception of her own body. Though not explicably stated in the movie; it is heavily implied that Nina suffers from a mental illness that causes her to have hallucinations. As she is chosen to play that parts of both the black and white swan for her theatres production of swan lake her inability to encapsulate the character of the black swan incites feelings of jealousy and fear from her more free-spirited rival Lily–played by Mila Kunis. In Nina’s descent to outcompete her rival and find the black swan within her, she completely let’s go of any sense of reality, leading to a fatal accident on the night of her performance. In the end however, Nina received the greatest applause and standing ovation for her depiction of both parts and as she took her last breaths on that stage all she could feel was deep validation of her own evocation. The question remains, what are you willing to do for perfection?
