Boycotting the 2016 Oscars
On Sunday, Feb. 28th, the 2016 Oscars will be held for the 88th time at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, CA.
The 2016 Academy Awards has some of the best actors nominated to receive what has been well deserved for all their hard work and dedication. Although, others have a lot to say about this year’s Oscars and are highly upset.
On Friday, Jan. 16, Al Sharpton had a few words for the Academy over the long list of Oscar nominees.
“Hollywood is like the Rocky Mountains, the higher up you get the whiter it gets,” Sharpton stated.
For the second year in a row, black actors as well as directors are being overlooked by the academy. In fact, several actors are calling for a boycott of the upcoming awards show.
Jada Pinkett Smith as well as Spike Lee announced on Martin Luther King Jr. Day that they will not be attending the 2016 Oscars because of the lack of diversity in this year’s nominations.
They both took to social media, sharing their thoughts about it. After Jada Pinkett Smith shared a video, Janet Hubert, who co-starred alongside Will Smith for years on “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air”, responded to Jada. In Janet’s video she asked a rhetorical question in which she said, “Does your man not have a mouth of his own with which to speak?”
Boone Isaacs, Academy President, has tried to make the show in February more diverse, bringing in black comedian Chris Rock to host. After hearing Jada and Lee speak out about this problem, Isaacs issued a statement promising more diversity.
The only question here is, will the Oscars be more diverse as promised?
