Dia De los muertos, or day of the dead, is a holiday celebrated in Mexico where they make altars to remember the dead, traditional dishes and their favorite foods that they liked when they were living. It’s an important holiday where we pray and remember friends and family members who have passed.
“What me and my family do is create a small alter with my grandparents and my dog who passed away name Edgar. We put their favorite things together and light candles and just talk about our past” said Yuri Valadez Junior at La Joya community high school.
Dia de los Muertos only happens during October 31 thru November 2, where each day is different from the day of the dead to night of the dead. It was the Aztec who celebrated the holiday for the dead back in the 16th century for the gods. Now in Mexico, people go out in a parade and celebrate together, making decorations, face painting as skeleton and dancing. We must remember that El Dia de los Muertos is important to everyone for the loved ones that have went to the next life and we celebrate so we won’t forget the good times we had with them and how our family grew little by little.
“My family whole family is gonna have a get together party for celebrating the day of dead and its tradition for the memories of a loved ones that never fades” said Chris Meja Senior at la Joya community high school.
In the end it’s a great way to remember the past and to know where you came from. Also if you’ve never watched the movie Coco from Disney, I recommend to watch it to learn more about El Dia de los Muertos.
