On August 15th 2024, staff member, librarian, and advisor of the book club – Mrs. Igwe (Eeg-way) talked about the library and how she is no stranger to making bonds with students. She has high hopes that this year at La Joya, will be a good one.
For those unfamiliar with the library staff, an important thing to keep in mind is that they are always willing to go the extra mile. Everything they do is with regard for the students. “My favorite feature about the library are the students. At the end of the day, the tables, the seating, even the books I purchase. It’s all with the students in mind,” explains Mrs. Igwe. “When doing my giveaways, contests, and raffles, all of it would be pointless without the students.
Mrs. Igwe is big on socialization and the involvement of students. She feels as though La Joya can be seen as a place of comfort. “I wish kids could be more connected. You guys are younger so you may have these walls put up, but you can let your guard down. Let’s be besties! It’s okay to be here. We may not be the flashiest, but we don’t need to be. We’re doing our thing here.”
When growing up, the library wasn’t a place that students would frequent during Mrs. Igwe’s teenage years. “When I was in high school, nobody went to the library. I think I had only been there once and that was for a class.” Having been a student, and going into her 10th year at La Joya, Mrs. Igwe is familiar with the connotations that school libraries receive. Knowing this, she has other plans for the library at La Joya. “Come to the library because that’s where it’s at. The big goal is that I want to create a space where they (students), like, want to be here. During the mornings and lunch, it gets busy in here, and not just because everyone’s checking out books,” says Mrs. Igwe. Students are recommended to visit the library, because it offers not only books for the readers, but also a comfortable environment and kind staff to help students wind down.
