Journalism begins with wonder; without humanity’s desire to grow and learn, there is no development. Journalism is necessary not only to allow for the spread of knowledge, but also to form connections with people around the globe. As Robert Fisk put it,
“It’s a journalist’s job to be a witness to history. We’re not there to worry about ourselves. We’re there to try and get as near as we can, in an imperfect world, to the truth and get the truth out.”
journalism is a documentation of history and preservation of information. People get to share their story and connect with those alike; take social media, were people form relationships over shared interests such as videogames and hobbies.
As early as the 15th-16th century when the first publicized newspaper spread in England and France, information has been shared along the mass population. And as Harry Reasoner said,
“If you’re a good journalist, what you do is live a lot of things vicariously, and report them for other people who want to live vicariously.”
sharing stories across borders, the reach of impact is endless. From Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon broadcasting to crime podcasts everyone has an outlet of creativeness and adventure to take from someone else. There is something for everyone and the opportunity to learn never ends.
On a final note, journalism isn’t only a profession, it connects the world, it shines light in the dark, and in the age of information its connection through stories and experiences that brings people together.
