As we all know, Mary Jane Watson is the belle and love interest of our friendly neighbor the Amazing Spider-Man. Peter Parker’s love interest has always been portrayed by a white female in all previously produced Spider-Man films; Kristen Dunst as Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man (2002) and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy in

The Amazing Spider-Man (2014). Although, the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man: Homecoming that is to be released in 2017, Zendaya, an African American woman, is casted to play the role of Mary Jane Watson. Although she is known to dominate the red carpet, here has been an uproar of mixed reactions about this casting.

“…if she acts the way she is meant to act, then she can do a great job. Stan Lee says she’s gonna be great wonderful and I trust him.” Michael Enero, an avid comic book fan, said. Some comic book fans are more concerned for the role she has to fill in as an essential character of the plot line.

Although, a handful of people were not in favor of this casting decision. Referring to Zendaya’s race, doubt and dissatisfaction were implied about her ability to play the role. But many were quick to stand in her defense:

“I think it’s amazing. It’s a real step-up in the industry. Usually these actors are white and I think with everything that has been going on it nice to see diversity.” Tessa Neagu said. As a feminist, Neagu finds this casting, along with the very diverse rest of the cast, a “great step for the industry” for the representation of minorities in Hollywood.

Bringing a woman of color to the big screens is a huge hint of our social progress. It displays how much we have come along as a diverse society in comparison to when the original Spider-Man was issued in 1984. Many disagree with this casting decision, many are in favor – either way it is getting the press it needs.
